Project Update

Groundbreaking Ceremony Marks Start of Transformative Project
The construction of the US$334 million ZESCO 330kV high-voltage transmission lines officially commenced with a groundbreaking ceremony in Kasama, attended by Mines, Energy, and Water Development Minister Christopher Yaluma and Chinese Ambassador to Zambia Zhou Yuxiao. The project is set to create over 3,000 direct and indirect jobs in Eastern, Luapula, Northern, and Muchinga Provinces, while addressing long-standing power challenges in the region.

Addressing Power Challenges
Minister Yaluma highlighted that the frequent power outages experienced in the four provinces during peak hours, caused by reliance on inadequate 66kV power from the Pensulo substation, will soon be resolved. He emphasized that electricity is no longer a luxury but a necessity for driving industrial development, promoting economic growth, and improving the quality of life for citizens. The government remains committed to expanding electricity access to rural and peri-urban areas, aligning with the Vision 2030 goal of achieving 50% electrification.

Unlocking Economic Potential
Yaluma expressed concern over the underdevelopment of Northern Province, which has significant untapped potential in mining and tourism. Insufficient and unreliable electricity supply has deterred mining investments and forced some companies to export unprocessed ore, undermining value addition and job creation. The new transmission lines are expected to unlock these opportunities, fostering economic growth and development.

Job Creation and Regional Benefits
Ambassador Zhou Yuxiao underscored the critical role of transmission lines in economic development, comparing them to blood vessels that deliver power to all sectors of the economy. The project is expected to create 1,000 direct and 2,000 indirect jobs during construction. Once completed, the upgraded power grid will not only meet local demand but also enable potential electricity exports to neighboring countries like Tanzania and Malawi, generating additional revenue for Zambia.

A Vision for the Future
The 330kV transmission project represents a significant step toward achieving Zambiaโ€™s development goals. By improving energy access and reliability, the project will support key sectors such as mining, agriculture, education, health, tourism, and manufacturing. It also reflects the governmentโ€™s commitment to sustainable development and poverty reduction through infrastructure investment.

The Pensulo-Mpika-Kasama and Pensulo-Msoro-Chipata West Transmission Project is a transformative initiative that will enhance energy security, drive economic growth, and improve the quality of life for thousands of Zambians. The supply of ACSR Moose Greased conductors is a critical component of this landmark project, ensuring the reliable and efficient transmission of electricity across the region.
