Project Update
Panamaโs Growing Energy Demand
Panama, one of Latin Americaโs fastest-growing economies, faces a rapidly increasing demand for electricity, growing at an annual rate of 6-8%. By the end of 2015, the countryโs generation capacity reached 3,235 MW, comprising 53% hydroelectric, 37% thermal, and 10% wind and solar energy.
To address this demand and diversify its energy mix, Panama has implemented policies to incentivize renewable energy projects. Between 2011 and 2013, the National Assembly enacted three statutes offering tax and other incentives for wind, natural gas, and solar power generation. These measures aim to reduce reliance on reservoir-based hydroelectric power, which faces challenges such as environmental concerns, drought conditions, and supply limitations.
Transmission Challenges and Opportunities
While private sector investments in wind and solar projects have surged, the growth of electricity supply has been hindered by transmission capacity limitations. Existing transmission lines are unable to efficiently transfer energy generated in the western region, near the Costa Rican border, to the eastern region, where Panama Cityโthe countryโs economic hubโis located.
The 100MVA Power Plant Generator project, led by ETESA, is a critical step toward addressing these challenges. By supplying high-quality 35kV XLPE-TR power cables, the project ensures the reliable and efficient transmission of electricity, supporting the integration of renewable energy sources and enhancing the stability of the national grid.
This initiative underscores Panamaโs commitment to sustainable energy development and infrastructure modernization. By strengthening its transmission network, Panama is paving the way for a more resilient and diversified energy system, capable of meeting the growing demands of its economy and population.
