Project Update
NGCP Advances Mindanao-Visayas Interconnection Project (MVIP)
The National Grid Corporation of the Philippines (NGCP) has made significant progress in unifying the Philippine grid with the completion of critical components of the Mindanao-Visayas Interconnection Project (MVIP). Key milestones include the construction of Cable Terminal Stations (CTS) in Santander, Cebu, and Dapitan, Zamboanga del Norte, as well as the installation of two 92-kilometer 350kV high-voltage direct current (HVDC) power cables and two 92-kilometer fiber optic cables. Site acceptance tests (SATs) were successfully conducted at both CTS locations to ensure compliance with NGCPโs stringent requirements.
The submarine cable component, which began in November 2018, faced delays due to the COVID-19 pandemic, including restrictions on foreign experts, work suspensions, and reduced manpower. Further setbacks occurred when a third-party vessel damaged submarine cable no. 1, with repairs completed in November 2021. Despite these challenges, NGCP remains committed to advancing the project.
On February 19, 2022, NGCP energized the Lala-Aurora 138kV Transmission Line, a critical MVIP component that enhances power transmission reliability between Lanao del Norte and the Zamboanga Peninsula.
NGCPโs Statement
โNGCP is pleased to report the completion of these critical MVIP components, which are now ready for energization. While we aimed to meet the original timeline, unforeseen circumstances necessitated adjustments. We are working diligently to complete the overhead transmission line segments and move the project toward commissioning, ultimately connecting the Luzon, Visayas, and Mindanao grids,โ the company stated.
NGCP also emphasized the need for support from local and national governments to address delays caused by permitting issues, right-of-way disputes, and unsupportive landowners.
MVIP Overview
The MVIP will link the Mindanao grid to the Visayas grid through an HVDC system with an initial capacity of 450 MW. Several other components are slated for completion, including:
December 2022:ย Dumanjug Bus-in to Colon-Samboan 138kV Transmission Line
August 2022:ย Dapitan-Lala 350kV Transmission Line, Kauswagan-Lala 230kV Transmission Line, and Kolambugan-Lala 20kV Transmission Line
October 2022:ย Dumanjug-Santander 350kV Transmission Line, Magdugo-Dumanjug 230kV Transmission Line, and Dumanjug-Alegria 20kV Transmission Line
